DOVER - Mattie Pendarvis Brown departed this life on Oct. 21, 2016 after a brief, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 86 years young. Mrs. Brown was the only child of the late Levy and Mattie Lee Pendarvis. She was born, reared, and educated in Durham, N.C. She is an alumnus of N.C. Central University. She is a veteran of the Air Force, where she met her husband, Allen Brown. Mattie was a member of the NCO Wives Club of Dover Air Force Base for many years. She retired from Kmart after 18 years of service, then worked at McCrory Discount Store. Mattie loved the Lord and her Whatcoat family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, watching her favorite soap operas, game shows, and sporting events. She was preceded in death by Allen Brown, her husband of 45 years; an infant son, Derek Allen; and a daughter, Deirdre "Dee Dee" Brown. Mattie is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Gregory) Walker, of Roswell, Ga., and Allena Brown, of Camden; three granddaughters, Amber (Matthew) Dexheimer, of Chula Vista, Calif., Gaelyn (Wayne) Warren, of Marietta, Ga., and Erryn Walker, of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Owen Dexheimer, Kailey Dexheimer, and Fiona Warren; two cousins, Freddilien Manigauet, of Charleston, S.C. and Jessie Spell, of Hoffman, N.C.; as well as many extended family and friends to whom she was lovingly known as Mom, Mom Mattie, G'ma, Nana, GiGi, and Grandma Brown. Mattie's vivacious smile, wit, wisdom, and sass will greatly be missed by all who were touched by Downtown Mattie Brown. Funeral services will take place 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, in Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Saulsbury Rd., Dover; where family and friends may view from 6 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
