Mary Ellen Downes, 78

RIDGELY, Md. - Mary Ellen Downes of Ridgely died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. She was 78.

Miss Downes was born in Ridgely, daughter of the late Norman Crossley and Ola Emma Starkey Downes.

She was a graduate of Ridgely High School and attended Washington College in Chestertown.

In 1960, Miss Downes went to work for the Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capital in the District of Columbia and lived in Falls Church, Va. In 1996, she retired as a product sales specialist and moved back to Ridgely.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Lee Downes, March 12, 2005; and three brothers, Charles S. Downes, Norman F. Downes and Mervin C. Downes.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and her six cats.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday in Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Caroline County Humane Society, 407 W. Bell St., Ridgely, MD 21660; or Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, 4301 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20008.

Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Hillsboro.
