Mary Elizabeth Short, 86

SARASOTA, Fla. - Mary Elizabeth Short of Sarasota, formerly of Bethany Beach, Del., died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, in Sarasota after a brief illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Short was born in Cincinnati on April 20, 1921.

She graduated from Deer Park High School and from Little Ford-Nelson School of Commerce.

Upon graduation Mrs. Short relocated to Washington, D.C., where she accepted a position with the office of Inter-American Affairs.

In 1945, she began working for the U.S. Department of Defense and was assigned to Berlin.

In 1946, while in Germany, she married William P. Short Jr., who was serving as an officer with the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Mr. Short died in 1999.

In 1948, the couple returned to the United States where they were stationed at various army bases until her husband retired from active duty in 1954. They then moved to Bethany Beach, where she worked in real estate until her retirement in 1982.

Mrs. Short was a member of both Ocean View Presbyterian Church and Church of the Palms, Sarasota.

She was the only child of the late Harry Haverland and Malena (Randell) Haverland.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Ansley Short Vinyard of Salisbury, Md., and Pamela Lee Short Ryan of Sarasota; two sons, Rodney James Short of Bethany Beach and William P. Short III of New York City; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ocean View Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mary's memory to the Ocean View Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 287, Ocean View, DE. 19970.
