Mary E. Welch, 78
FELTON - Mary E. Welch of Felton died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, in her home, with her family whom she loved dearly by her side. She was 78.
Mrs. Welch was born in Denton, Md., daughter of the late Jacob and Ida Shuster.
She was a retired school bus driver of 31 years, driving for the Cool's Bus Service Co. She enjoyed driving a school bus and saw many generations of families ride her bus. It was not uncommon for her to see the children of the children that she previously carried.
In her spare time, Mrs. Welch enjoyed planting flowers, both inside her home and outside. She also collected miniature glass shoes. Above all, she enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren tremendously.
She was very much the matriarch of the family. She took great care of her family, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Every Tuesday night in her home was family night, and her whole family would get together for dinner. Every member would look forward to her yeast rolls that she made from scratch. As soon as they came out of the oven, they disappeared. She made five or six dozen rolls, not only for her family, but to pass out to neighbors as well. If a family member could not make the dinner, she made sure a plate was made and sent home to them.
Mrs. Welch was a 32-year member of the Women of the Moose 534 of Harrington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Willard J. Patterson Sr.; and two sisters, Bessie Carter and Amy Watkins.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, William L. Welch Sr. of Felton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William L. and Jessica Welch Jr. of Milford and William "Ted" Welch of Thompsonville; three daughters and a son-in-law, Rose L. Patterson of Dover, M. Ellen and Thomas "Eddie" Cain of Houston and Shirley Kellam of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, George Slater of Felton and Frank Slater of Farmington; five grandchildren, Eddie Patterson, Mary Cain, Alexis Colby Welch, Jay Patterson and Katina Patterson; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Ryan Patterson, Jaycee Rose Patterson, Kendall McGinnis and Cheyenne Cain; a niece, Pauline Kinsey; a nephew, Harvey Gourley; and several more nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
