Martin Golden, 80

SMYRNA - Martin Golden of Smyrna died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 80.

Mr. Golden was a graduate of Wilmington High School and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He also held an honorary doctorate of pharmacy from the Arkansas Board of Pharmacy.

He was a U.S. Army combat veteran of World War II.

Mr. Golden was a community pharmacist and owner of Golden Pharmacy, Smyrna.

He was a devoted lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. He played the trombone in many area bands. He truly loved and devoted his life to his family, friends and his hometown of Smyrna.

After the sale of his store, Mr. Golden became the director of the Delaware Office of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs for 20 years. He was executive director of the Delaware Pharmaceutical Society, president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, president of the American Pharmaceutical Association's Academy of General Practice and president of the Delaware Jaycees. He was chairman and president of other varied professional groups. He was an elected member of the Smyrna Town Council and served as president of Congregation at Beth Sholom Dover. He was a lifelong member of the Delaware Fraternal Order of Police and Citizen's Hose Company No. 1, Smyrna.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita; a son and a daughter-in-law, Chad and Teresa Golden; a daughter and a son-in-law, Nina and Ric Johns; five grandchildren, Aaron Johns, Jacob Golden, Holly Johnson, Jennifer Dunlap and Glenn Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Sahara Dunlap and Dublin Dunlap.

Shiva will be 7 p.m. today and Monday at 325 Lake Como Circle, Smyrna.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, in the Harry Levin Center for Pharmacy, 27 N. Main St., Smyrna.

Private graveside services will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Harry Levin Center for Pharmacy and History, 27 N. Main St., Smyrna.
