Marshall Arnell

DOVER - Marshall Arnell, of Dover and Bonita Springs, Fla., died Thursday Oct. 20, 2011, at Christiana Care Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Arnell was born Aug. 26, 1940, in the city of Victorias, Negros Island, Philippines, to the late Kyle Foster Arnell, and the late Rosario Janduquile Arnell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Stella Lambe, and Rosario Johnson; and brothers, Kyle, Roger and Malcolm Arnell. Mr. Arnell came to the United States at the end of WWII with his parents and siblings in 1945. He was one of two black students who were first admitted to Dover High School and graduated in 1958. He graduated from Delaware State University in 1962 and studied at Howard University in Washington. He received his Masters Degree in Asian Studies from Washington College. Mr. Arnell was the first black teacher to be hired at Dover High School in 1962. Mr. Arnell worked as a teacher for 22 years, and then as a vice principal for eight years at Dover High School, retiring in 1991. He then went to Colonel Richardson High School in Caroline County Maryland as an Assistant Principal, retiring in 1998. He loved history and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed wood carving, and drawing, and he loved playing with his dogs, Daisy and Bella. When he and his wife Libby were at their home in Florida, he volunteered at the Bonita Springs Lions Club. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Libby Fisher Arnell; his children, Marcia Arnell of Dover, Harry Arnell and wife Teresa of Sacramento, Cailf.; his wife Libby's children, Tim Brown and wife Bonnie of Boston, Mass., Todd Brown of Nags Head, N.C., Chris Brown and wife Juli of Wake Forest, N.C., and Amy Brown of Dover. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Arnell and wife Carolyn of Rochester, N.Y.; his sister, Clara Boone of Dover; and his grandchildren, Marissa Arnell, Allison Beaudry, Kiera Arnell, Troy Brown, Greg Conklin and wife Caitlin, and Nick Conklin and Erin Marie; and many nieces and nephews. In addition Mr. Arnell will be fondly remembered, and missed by many of his former students and colleagues. The family would like to thank the staff in the Critical Care Unit at Christiana Medical Center for their excellent care. The services are private at the request of the family.
