TOWNSEND - Luther Roop, age 92, of Townsend, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2016 with his loving daughter and son-in-law by his side. Luther was born November 13, 1923 in Big Sandy, W.Va., the son of the late James David Roop (Poppy) and Minnie Bedwell Roop. He came to Delaware in 1944 at the age of 21 and started working for the railroad. He worked for them for over 40 years from which he retired. Prior to that, he worked in the coal mines in W.Va. alongside his father. As a young man, he would hop the coal trains as his way of traveling from town to town. At age six or eight, he and his father would walk 2-3 hours up the mountain, down the valley and thru the orchard to get moonshine, then bringing home six to eight gallons to sell it. That is how they made their living in part. Luther enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his property. He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan and enjoyed watching WWE and the UFC. He will always be fondly remembered by his friends for his passion of playing bingo. He was the last of six siblings and was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife of 58 years, June; his daughter, Cyndi; and his son, Randy. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Faulkner and her husband Rick of Townsend; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2016 in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m. Burial will be privately held. The family would like to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice for their care and support. Condolence letters may also be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
