WORTON, Md. - Lester Matthews of Worton died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 92.
He was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Freehold, N.J., son of the late Frank and Florence (Brocklebank) Matthews.
Mr. Matthews worked in the carpet business before joining the staff at Rutgers University as a superintendent of the research farm for 17 years, retiring in 1980, the year he moved to Kent County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Althea (Shafto) Matthews, in 1986; a son, Carlton Matthews; and a granddaughter, Karen Jean Moore.
He is survived by two sons, Clifford Matthews of Worton and Lester R. Matthews of Farmingdale, N.J.; a daughter, Janice Lee Dey of Betterton; a sister, Eleanor Soffild of Concord, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale.
Memorials may be offered to Lynch Community Church c/o the Galena Funeral Home.
