Leroy C. Thompson, 87

LEWES - Leroy C. Thompson of Lewes died Monday, April 2, 2007, in Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. He was 87.

Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Manasquan, N.J., son of Clinton F. and Ethel Roland Thompson.

He enlisted in the National Guard in September 1940, and his unit was federalized in 1942. He served in the Aleutian Islands as a special vehicle operator engaged in building an Air Base at Big Delta with Squadron D, 1455th AAF Base Unit. During his service in the AAF he was awarded the American Service Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal.

Following discharge in 1945, Mr. Thompson returned to Manasquan where he was engaged in construction with his father until the family moved to West Palm Beach, Fla.

In 1976 he moved to Lewes and was employed at Beebe Hospital until retirement in 1987.

He will be remembered fondly by his family and many acquaintances for his friendly smile and special greeting, "Hi, Sport, how's your motor running?"

Mr. Thompson was a member of Groome United Methodist Church, Lewes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold "Buck" Thompson; and his niece, Kathi Thompson Booth.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Marshall Thompson of Rehoboth Beach; his niece, Shelly Thompson Sposato and husband, Fred of Milton; seven great-nieces and nephews, William "Buck" Booth, Meg Booth Lawson and husband, Cliff, Allisa Booth, Mark Booth, Spencer Booth, Marshall Owings, Casey Owings; and great-great-nephew, Case Louis Lawson.

A memorial service will be April 17 at 7 p.m. in Groome United Methodist Church, Savannah Road and Dewey Avenue, Lewes.

Burial will be private in Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.
