Larry James Vodvarka passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019.
He was born Nov. 26, 1941 in Chicago, Ill. to James Vodvarka, Jr. and Verna (Slack) Vodvarka.
Larry's family moved to a farm in Hartly in 1948. Larry worked alongside his parents on the farm, but he also played sports and was an exceptional student.
Larry graduated Smyrna High School as valedictorian and studied mathematics at the University of Delaware on a National Merit Scholarship. After graduating college, Larry served in the U.S. Army stationed at the Pentagon. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service following his military service.
Larry had many interests. He enjoyed bicycling, classical music, crossword puzzles, playing chess and scrabble. He was a voracious reader. He especially enjoyed reading and studying History and Astronomy. Larry was a reserved person, but had a wry sense of humor and enjoyed sharing his knowledge on many subjects.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James "Voss" Vodvarka; sister, Nancy Young; and nephew, Kevin Vodvarka.
Larry is survived by, his sisters, Bonnie Vodvarka, Joanna Vodvarka (Gene McLaughlin), and Gail Brynes (Joseph); brother-in-law, Harold Young; sister-in-law, Carol; nieces and nephews, Sydney Young Riggi (Tony), Eric Vodvarka, Kristy Vodvarka, and Andrew McLaughlin; grandniece, Kayleigh Vodvarka; and grandnephew, Kole Vodvarka.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover.
We would like to thank the wonderful staff of State Street Assisted Living and Seasons Hospice for their exceptional care of our brother.
In lieu of flowers we ask that contributions be made to your favorite charity.
