DOVER - Kenneth K. Robertson, Jr. passed away at the Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover after a long illness. Born in western Pa. on Feb. 16, 1942, Ken was the oldest son of Kenneth, Sr. and Josephine Robertson. He graduated from Saegertown High School and then attended Allegheny College. There he played football and lettered all four seasons. Ken gained his B.A. in History in 1965 and completed the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. He was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force and served primarily in security police assignments with the Strategic Air Command, Military Airlift Command and United States Air Forces in Europe. Ken had tours at Ellsworth AFB, S.D.; Nha Trang, Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star; RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge, UK; Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Ill.; RAF Mildenhall, UK and Minot AFB, North Dakota. Ken also completed his MS in Management from the University of Arkansas. He retired early due to a disability in April 1981 and moved to Dover in 1996 where he became active in the Air Force Association, Air Mobility Command Museum, Dover Historical Commission, Military Officers' Association and Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce. During 1996-98, he chaired the NICKEL GRASS 25 Committee which organized an international tribute to all of the airlift participants, to Dover AFB and to the C-5 Galaxy. This included hosting a two-day, international 25th Anniversary celebration of the airlift to Israel which took place in Oct. 1973. Additionally, Ken wrote a book Operation NICKEL GRASS: The U.S. Air Force's 1973 Yom Kippur War Airlift to Israel. Ken was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Don. Ken is survived by his brothers, William and Douglas; and sister-in-law, Stacey. Burial will be with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations to Allegheny College, P.O. Box 21, Meadville, Pa. 16335 or the Air Mobility Command Museum Foundation, Inc., 1301 Heritage Road, Dover AFB, Del. 19902 are suggested.
