Joseph Wendell Watkins, 67

DOVER - Joseph Wendell Watkins of Dover died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007. He was 67.

He was born in McComas, W.Va., on July 28, 1940, to the late Lonnie E. and the Rev. Hardin T. Watkins Sr.

At an early age, Mr. Watkins accepted Christ in his life and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bluefield, W.Va.

He was educated in the public schools of Bluefield.

Upon graduation, Mr. Watkins joined the U.S. Army.

After leaving the military, he relocated to Bronx, N.Y., with his mother and family.

Mr. Watkins was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

He was very charismatic and a fun person to be with.

He will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dora Watkins (mother of their two children); three brothers, Salem Watkins, Robert Watkins and Ernest Watkins; and one sister, Ethel Celeste Watkins.

He is survived by a son, Keith Wendell Watkins; a daughter, Christina Rene Watkins, both of Bronx, N.Y.; wife, Essie Watkins of Bronx, N.Y.; two stepchildren, Mark and Connie; brothers, Hardin T. Watkins and his wife, Gladys of Dover and John D. Watkins and his wife, Monika of Bluefield; sisters, Gracie C. Thompson of Bluefield and Jacqueline Elliott and her husband, Jimmy of Millsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Union Missionary Baptist Church, 883 Lincoln St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Arrangements are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
