CORDOVA, Md. - John William "Bill" Cooper of Cordova, Md., died on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md. He was 59.
Born Nov. 16, 1948, in Easton, Md., he was the son of the late John P. and Flora E. McQuay Cooper.
After attending Talbot County Public Schools, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Germany.
He was a talented pedal steel guitar player and from the late 60s until the late '90s he worked as a musician. He performed from Alaska to Florida to Nashville, Tenn., with, among others, The Ray Cobb Band, Mel Price and The Santa Fe Rangers and Bird Dog and the Road Kings.
While playing with the various bands, he either backed or opened for such country stars as Joe Diffie, Freddie Hart, Billy "Crash" Craddock, Don Williams, Ernest Tubb, Johnny Paycheck, Hank Thompson, The Forester Sisters, Shelly West, Lacy J. Dalton, Tom T. Hall and Dottie West.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Samuel "Sammy" Cooper.
Mr. Cooper is survived by two sons, Robert S. "Bobby" Johnson of Cordova and John W. "Bear" Cooper Jr. of Smyrna, Del.; a sister, Shirley Patchett and her husband Kenny of Cordova; five grandchildren, several nieces, great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, Md.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Talbot County Unit, PO Box 1306, Easton, MD or Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.
