CHESTERTOWN, Md. - John Mudge Carman of Chestertown died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in Chester River Hospital, Chestertown. He was 92
Mr. Carman was born June 24, 1914, in St. Paul, Minn. son of the late Rev. Raymond Spencer and Geraldine Mudge Carman.
His childhood years were spent in Illinois and Elizabeth, N.J., where he graduated from The Pingry School as valedictorian. He graduated in 1935 from Colgate University, also as valedictorian and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a Rhodes Scholar finalist. He earned a Master of Arts from New York University.
Although he was an artist all of his life, his professional career led him to Vick Chemical Co., Johnson and Johnson, and on to become director of the textbook division at Harcort Brace in New York City.
Mr. Carman was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and its choir in Chestertown, the Art's League, and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts of which he was interim director. There, he also led a jazz concert series for a number of years.
He enjoyed music, reading, gardening and painting.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. Simpson.
He is survived by his children, David Spencer of Raleigh, N.C. and Deborah Dorrance of Califon, N.J.; his wife of 24 years, Mary Elizabeth Roberts Carman and her three daughters, Lisa Winter, Martha Ann Dooley and Susan Young; a sister, Constance Wood of Orleans, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carman will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 N. Cross St., Chestertown.
Burial will be held privately.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Pingry Scholarship Fund, The Pingry School, P.O. Box 366, Martinsville, NJ 08836.
