BERLIN, Md. - John Louis Johnson of Berlin passed away Monday, May 28, 2007, in the Veteran Hospital in Elsmere. He was 87.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Havre De Grace, son of the late Joseph Norman and M. Agnes Barnes Johnson.
He grew up in Havre De Grace and upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945.
From the training he received in the Army he continued his cooking career, serving as chef in numerous hotels and restaurant establishments in the Ocean City area: Hooper"s, Sea Scape, Carousel, Fenwick Inn and several other establishments.
After his career as a Chef he worked at Wal-Mart, in Ocean City, Md. as a greeter until his illness forced him to retire.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Johnson; and a granddaughter, Vanessa Johnson.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Johnson of Philadelphia and Mabel Parker of Berlin; one aunt, Madeline Barnes of Baltimore; three grandchildren, Vernon Johnson of Alexander, Va., Leonard and wife, Jeanette Parker of Orlando, Fla., Sandra and husband, Wesley Purnell of Salisbury; a special niece, mary L. Murray of Millsboro, Del.; a special companion, Monica Manuel of Frankford, Del.; a special cousin and prayer partner, Mickey of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 219 S. Washington St., Millsboro and on Saturday from noon-2 p.m. in St. John 2nd Baptist Church on Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro with funeral services at 2 p.m.
Burial will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.
