John 'Jack' Lewis, 95
DOVER - John "Jack" Lewis passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in the company of his loving wife and devoted daughter.
Jack was born in Dover, Del. on March 30, 1926, to the late John Edwin and Doris (Townsend) Lewis. He graduated from Dover High School in 1944 and was drafted into the Army two weeks later serving in Europe until the end of WW II. He attended Beacom Business College in Wilmington, Del. from September 1947 to May of 1949 where he met his wife, Nancy.
Jack joined the Delaware Veterans Inc., Dover Post #2 in 1949 serving as Post Commander twice and once as State Commander. He was a member of the American Legion in Dover, the Elks Lodge and served as President of the Board of the Friends of the Delaware Archives. He has been a charter member of the Delaware Genealogical Society since 1977, co-founder and their first President in 1990. At age twelve, he joined the Boy Scouts at the People's Church in Dover, there he attained the rank of Life Scout before transferring to the Sea Scouts. Jack was registered with the Boy Scouts of American for over 74 years and served as Scoutmaster for seven years in the (Lions Club and People's Church troops). He was christened in the People's Church of Dover where he was an active member and supporter his entire life and retired on March 31, 1988, from the State of Delaware's Division of Motor Fuel Tax as Assistant Director.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Nancy Grant Lewis of Dover, Del.; daughters, Nancy Kathryn Boyle (Alfred) of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Sandra Lewis Titus of Salisbury, Md.; sons, Robert Grant Lewis of Lewes, Del. and John Edwin Lewis (Gail) of Sarasota, Fla.; brothers, Frederick T. Lewis of Clarksville, Md. and Arthur S. Lewis of Dover, Del.; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 30, 2021, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd. (RT 10), Dover, Del. Friends may call from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to People's Church of Dover, 46 S. Bradford Street, Dover, DE 19904.
