John C. Riggs, 62

CHURCH HILL, Md. - John C. Riggs of Church Hill died after a short illness in his home in the presence of his family on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007. He was 62.

Born July 25, 1944, in Indianapolis, Mr. Riggs was the son of the late William V. Jr. and Florence W. Riggs.

After graduating from Centreville High School in 1962, he joined the Maryland National Guard, which he belonged to for six years.

Mr. Riggs was a mechanic for most of his life, working for Kingstown Tractor, Renshaw and Emory, Chaires Brothers Inc. in Queen Anne, Easton Memorial Hospital, Glacier Refrigerated Express, Queen Anne's County Parks and Recreation and Queen Anne's Soil Conservation District.

He loved hunting and fishing, and NASCAR races, going whenever he could with his beloved friends. He also enjoyed attending tractor pulls.

Mr. Riggs is survived by his wife, Shirley T. Riggs, whom he married June 3, 1971; two brothers, William V. Riggs III of Centreville, and Thomas K. Riggs of Greensboro; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David W. Riggs, in 1980.

Funeral services will be held in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, on Monday at 11 a.m., where friends may call from 6 to 8 Sunday evening.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jabez Brown Jr., Phillip Brown, Michael Clough, John Clough, James Hollingshead and William F. Hollingsworth Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be his hunting buddies, Brian Brown, Jay Brown, Will Brown, Michael Watson and Paul Porter.

Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery.
