ANDERSON, S.C. - James Frederick Gunnells, U.S. Air Force retired master sergeant, of Anderson died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, in the AnMEd Health Medical Center, Anderson. He was 74.
Born in Franklin County, Ga., on May 31, 1933, Mr. Gunnells was the son of the late Leland H. Sr. and Nelle Wallace Gunnells.
He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force; 11 years as a flight engineer, including 18 months in the 54th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Guam, tracking typhoons. Mr. Gunnells last duty station was the 89th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 89th Military Airlift Wing, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for service to the Presidential and Special Missions Aircraft of the 89th.
Mr. Gunnels also spent 20 years as a heating and air conditioning technician and supervisor for Sears, Roebuck & Co.
He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, serving as past chairman of the trustees.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruth Damon Gunnells; a daughter, Susan E. Gunnells of Anderson; a son, David W. Gunnells and a daughter-in-law, Dina, of Holly Springs, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kayleigh Norris, Courtney Gunnells, Sean Gunnellsm and Meagan Gunnells, all of Holly Springs; and a brother, Leland Gunnells and a sister-in-law, Doris, of Franklin County.
The funeral service was held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Pearce officiating.
Interment followed at Bold Spring United Methodist Church Cemetery, Carnesville, Ga., with military honors.
