DAGSBORO - James E. Major Jr., of Dagsboro, formerly of Columbus, N.J., passed away Friday, June 20, 2008, at home. He was 87.
Mr. Major was a retired major of the U.S. Marine Corps and was a New Jersey school administrator.
He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, having served with the 1st, 2nd and 6th Marine Divisions.
Mr. Major was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234, MOAA, the 1st State Marine Corps League, 1st Marine Division, KWVA, NRA, the Knights of Columbus 11285 and St. Ann's Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
Mr. Major is survived by his wife of 35 years, Virginia Major; two daughters, Carol Lynn Major and Sueann M. Bennett, DVM; a brother-in-law, Bruce Post; a sister-in-law, Eileen Esgrow and her husband Buck; two grandsons, Jamie Worrell and Stanley Worrell; and three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be Wednesday from 8:30-10:15 a.m. at the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach.
Graveside services with full military honors will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Cemetery, 2398 Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, N.J.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to 1st Marine Division Scholarship Fund, 410 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054; or Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
