HARRINGTON - Irene Townsend Raughley, of Harrington, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, in her home. She was 88. Mrs. Raughley was born in Dover, the daughter of the late Timothy Edgar and Elsie Pearl (Betts) Townsend. She was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School class of 1938 and a graduate of the Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She worked as a private duty nurse in both Dover and Milford from 1942 until 1953. She then became a homemaker. Irene also worked at the Delaware State Fair as a nurse in the first aid station for many years. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was involved with the EverReady Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Caesar Rodney class of 1938 Alumni. She also enjoyed going on shopping trips with her two best friends, Kathleen Cain and Doris Clifton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edward Raughley in 1972; and two brothers, Riley "Pete" Townsend, and T. Edgar "Snooks" Townsend Jr.; and a sister, Ruth Townsend Moore. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kay Raughley Buck and David Buck of Harrington; a son and daughter-in-law, Harry E. and Teresa Robbins Raughley of Harrington; a brother-in-law, John W. Raughley of Dover; four grandchildren, Kristin Buck Strickland, Lisa Buck, Heather Raughley and Brent Raughley; and two great-grandchildren, Katie and Josh Strickland. The family wishes to thank her caregivers Connie, Carla and Debbie. They would also like to thank her Delaware Hospice team, Sandy, Diane, Shelia and Russ. Friends called from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington. Friends may also call today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Avenue, Harrington, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford - Harrington Highway, Harrington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or to Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Avenue, Harrington, DE 19952.
