Here is the latest Big Ten Conference sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — LSU did not place one-time pros Dae’Quan Wright, Zxavian Harris on its roster in advance of its season opener. A person familiar with the situation confirmed it to The Associated Press on Friday. The move appears to avoid an immediate confrontation with the Southeastern Conference, which had passed a rule forbidding former pros on rosters, only to see that rule put on hold by a court in Louisiana. It means LSU will open its season against Clemson on Saturday without Wright and Harris on the roster, according to the person who spoke to AP. The person did not want to be named because the school had not released the details publicly.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jayden Maiava passed for 349 yards and threw two of his three touchdown passes to freshman Trent Mosley, and No. 14 Southern California rolled to a 39-0 victory over Fresno State. Tanook Hines also made a TD catch for the unbeaten Trojans, who followed up their Week 0 win over San Jose State by streaking to a 32-0 lead through three quarters over the Bulldogs. USC’s defense allowed just 49 yards in the first three quarters while recording two safeties and forcing two turnovers under new coordinator Gary Patterson. Jayden Mandal passed for 77 yards with an interception in his second career start for the Bulldogs.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Alessio Milivojevic converted a fourth down with a 5-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to Rodney Bullard early in the fourth quarter and Michigan State went on to beat Toledo 30-20 on Friday night in Pat Fitzgerald’s debut as coach of the Spartans. Michigan State sealed the victory with an 11-play drive capped by Liam Boyd’s 51-yard field goal late in the game. It was Fitzgerald’s first win since leading Northwestern to a victory over Nebraska on Aug. 27, 2022. The Rockets were very competitive in coach Mike Jacobs’ first game with the program, taking over after Jason Candle left to lead Connecticut.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Ryan Browne threw for a career-high 317 yards and three touchdowns to lead Purdue to a 44-19 victory over Indiana State. Browne, who surpassed his previous record of 311 set last year, completed 23 of 29 passes. The junior had TD passes of 6 yards Chauncey Magwood, 7 yards to Tra’Mar Harris and 18 yards to Asaad Waseem.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Greg Schiano is the most successful coach in Rutgers’ football history. Yet after a stunning season-opening home loss to underdog UMass he is under the microscope. UMass, a 29 1/2-point underdog, beat the Scarlet Knights 37-21 on Thursday night, ending the nation’s longest losing streak at 16 games. Rutgers wasn’t just beaten on the scoreboard. It took a statistical beating, too. Schiano said he was outcoached and that his team was outplayed.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 2 Oregon hosts Boise State, No. 6 Indiana opens its national title defense against North Texas, and Wisconsin faces No. 4 Notre Dame at Lambeau Field in three of the spotlight games featuring Big Ten teams this week. Oregon has won a Bowl Subdivision-leading 38 straight nonconference home games. The Ducks faced a challenge from Boise State at home two years ago before winning 37-34. Former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover will make his Indiana debut Saturday as he steps in for Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The eligibility fights taking place in courts across the country are taking place with college basketball weeks away from starting preseason practices. Much of the focus has been on college football with that season starting last week. But basketball is roughly two months from opening night with preseason practices officially starting later this month. Most of the questions deal with lawsuits tied to the NCAA's move to a new five-year, age-based eligibility model. That has hundreds of players who completed four-year careers in the spring seeking to play a fifth season.

SEATTLE (AP) — Nearly 50 Division I football programs have changed conference affiliation in the past two years alone, leaving behind rivalries and dealing a blow to the familiar stability most alumni associate with their alma mater. The chase for dollars carries intangible costs to the brand. The Apple Cup this year will be played in the first week of September, an example of a rivalry that still exists but feels much different than it did for more than a century.
