MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — No. 7 Miami set a school record for yards and tied the mark for points in a game, with quarterbacks Darian Mensah and Luke Nickel each throwing three touchdown passes in a 77-7 win over lower-division Florida A&M on Thursday night. The Hurricanes finished with 856 yards, breaking the mark of 750 against Ball State in 2024. Miami had 77 points in a game twice previously, both against Savannah State. And the game was so one-sided that the teams agreed to shave five minutes off the fourth quarter, setting the clock for 10 minutes instead of the standard 15. By then, it was 77-0.
UNDATED (AP) — Georgia Tech is trying to avoid its first 0-2 start in decades when it hosts No. 18 Tennessee on Saturday to headline the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. The Yellow Jackets lost to Colorado in the opener. They haven't lost their first two games since starting 0-3 in 1989. The schedule includes a pair of road games against Big Ten teams with Wake Forest going to Purdue and Duke going to Illinois.
UNDATED (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference enters Week 2 of the football season with the national leader in receiving, passing and rushing yardage. Miami's Malachi Toney had a program-record 234 yards receiving against Stanford for the most by any Bowl Subdivision player so far. Pittsburgh's Mason Heintschel threw for a national-best 453 yards to go with an ACC-record seven TD throws against Miami (Ohio). And Duke's Nate Sheppard ran for a national-high 227 yards on 35 carries in the win against Tulane. That offered an early highlight amid the ACC going only 1-5 against teams from fellow power conferences.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina won’t host recruits for Saturday’s home debut against East Tennessee State after self-reporting a recruiting violation. University spokesman Kevin Best says the Tar Heels aren’t allowed to host unofficial visits because of the violation. Best says UNC was permitted to host recruits on official visits but opted to concentrate those on the remaining five home games. It's the latest bump for NFL coaching great Bill Belichick’s program. General manager Michael Lombardi resigned last week after being put on paid administrative leave amid a school investigation into conduct within the program.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Wide receiver Malachi Toney and quarterback Darian Mensah have rewritten Miami's record book in their first game as teammates. They led the Hurricanes to a 45-6 victory over Stanford. Toney broke a 42-year-old school record with 234 receiving yards. Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns. Coach Mario Cristobal wants the team to keep improving as they host Florida A&M on Thursday night. Miami seeks a 20th consecutive win in home openers. Cornerback OJ Frederique Jr. will miss significant time because of a shoulder injury.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 1 Ohio State at No. 4 Texas highlights the Week 2 schedule and is the first regular-season top-five matchup since the Buckeyes beat the Longhorns 14-7 in Columbus last year. There are plenty of reasons to watch. A bevy of future NFL players will be on the field. It’s a classic Big Ten-SEC matchup. Though no College Football Playoff spots are at stake, the outcome definitely could impact seeding come December. Both teams have been ranked in the top 10 for all six of their meetings and this will be the fourth time both are in the top five.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 1 Ohio State at No. 4 Texas has been a red-letter game on the college football calendar for months. The teams meet in Austin on Saturday in what will be a mini litmus test in the debate over Big Ten-SEC supremacy. It could also be a factor down the road in College Football Playoff seeding but cannot be considered a knockout game. The Longhorns will be trying to beat a No. 1 team for the first time since 2008. The Big Ten-SEC undercard Saturday has No. 11 Oklahoma at Michigan and Mississippi State at Minnesota.
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan won the game against Western Michigan but lost most of its support in The Associated Press college football poll. The Wolverines dropped from No. 16 to out of the rankings. It was the biggest fall from ranked to unranked after a win since at least 2008. Michigan had appeared on all 69 preseason ballots and was listed as high as No. 10 on one. The Wolverines were on just 22 ballots in the first regular-season poll.
