Helen West Downes Painton

TOWSON, Md. - Helen West Downes Painton, of Towson, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at her home. She was 94.

Born in Roesville, in Queen Anne's County, Helen was the daughter of the late Marshall Bailey Downes and Mary Anna Sparks Downes.

Mrs. Painton was a graduate of Church Hill High School.

After high school, in the early 1930s, she operated a dress shop in Easton.

During World War II, Helen worked for the Glenn L. Martin Co. (now Lockheed Martin) outside Baltimore.

Mrs. Painton was also later employed by the Westinghouse Corp.

She married A. Kenneth Painton in 1970.

For a time, the couple lived in Bermuda, and then later moved to Towson.

Mr. Painton died in 1975.

In her later years, Mrs. Painton greatly enjoyed spending time with her extended family and many friends.

She particularly enjoyed spending time with the family in Dewey Beach, Del.

Mrs. Painton also had a keen interest in politics and current events.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Esther Downes Nolan, Eleanor Downes Murray, and Mary Downes Cook Knoll; and one brother, Marshall Downes.

She is survived by one brother, James Albert Downes and his wife Phyllis of Timonium; five nephews, Michael Downes of Bethany Beach, Del., Peter Downes of Timonium, Ray Murray of San Francisco, James Downes of Centreville, and Bennett Downes of Dover, Del.; four nieces, Ann Murray of Baltimore, Mary Frances Brandin of Mercer Island, Wash., Barbara Haroz of Shirley, Mass., and Carolyn Mullen of Seaford, Del.; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday in the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., in Denton.

The interment was in the Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Memorials may be made in Helen's name to the Towson United Methodist Church, 501 Hampton Lane, Towson, MD 21286.
