She was born on January 21, 1946 in Germany to Latvian emigrants, Janis and Marijanna Akmentins, and grew up on the banks of the St. Jones River in the small town of Lebanon, where she raised her daughter Kimberly. Greta had many interests and skills. She was a fine artist and proficient in architectural design and construction. She loved flower gardening and landscaping. She was a member of The Dover English Country Dancers and enjoyed colonial dancing along with construction of colonial costumes. She was also very interested in politics and was a member of the 9-12 Delaware Patriots where she met with others to discuss legislation, elections and the protection of our constitutional liberties. She was widely read, preferring historical, technical and scientific literature over fiction. She was a dog lover with a special love for her dog Sweet William Whittendale "Willie", who preceded her in death in 2008. She worked as an engineer over the years in Dover, Harrington, and Milton and also for a while in Pennsylvania. She continued to do architectural drawings after retirement for different projects. Greta Whittendale was preceded in death by her parents, Janis and Marijanna Akmentins; and her brother, Charles Akmentins of Woodside. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Whittendale of Hartly; her daughter, Kimberly Lane and her husband Donald Lane of Felton, and their children Christopher Duerr and wife Sandra Carde-Duerr of Felton, Stephen and Michael Castura-Duerr of Bear, Jonathan Duerr and Hank Robinson of Smyrna, and Amy Lane of Bear. She was also survived by her husband Thomas's daughters and their families, Shelene Marie and Mark Manzi of Somers, Conn. and their sons, Michael Salzarulo currently in the US Navy, Mark Manzi Jr. and Mason Manzi, of Somers, Conn. and Jennifer and Paul Crowe and their daughter Phoebe Jean Crowe of Philadelphia, Pa. Also survived by sister-in-law, Ethyl Akmentins of Woodside, and her three daughters and families, Rachel and John Springer of Felton, Sandra and Roger Satterfield of Frederica, and Karla Akmentins of Woodside. She was a dearly loved and cherished wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family and also loved by many friends. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten as she has left an indelible and everlasting impression on us all. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at Pippin Funeral Home in Wyoming, where friends may gather one hour earlier. Interment to follow at Odds Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
