Gregory DeMello Martin went to his heavenly reward on February 2, 2022 with family by his side.
Greg was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on January 13, 1938 to Joseph Souza Martin and Ellen Josephine Clark Martin.
Greg grew up in Fairhaven, Mass. and attended Holy Family High School, Providence College for two years. After moving to Raleigh, N.C., he married Betty Rose King in 1960 and they were the proud parents of four sons: Chris, Tim, Scott and Jaye. After moving to Raleigh, Greg went back to college and graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill, N.C. with a degree in Business Administration in 1963.
In 1967, the family moved to Delaware where Greg worked at Playtex in the Accounting Department, then in 1970 he started work for the State of Delaware, first in the payroll department, then Division of Accounting and Department of Finance. He won Employee of the Year award for developing the State Credit Card Program. He retired in 2009 after 39 years of service.
Greg was a Bible scholar and enjoyed discussing scriptures. He was a Sunday school teacher, coached little league, youth group leader, and under his leadership, two young men became pastors. He liked history, travel, and classical music.
Greg was quite friendly, had a great sense of humor and made you laugh. He was a great husband, dad, brother and friend. He will be sorely missed and loved by many. He touched many lives.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, George of Tavares, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty; sons, Christopher Neal and Timothy Todd of Dover, Gregory Scott and wife Nancy of Colorado and Jaye and his wife Tammy of South Carolina; brothers, Gerald and his wife Marian of Tavares, Fla., Joseph and his wife Peg of Chicopee, Mass., David and his wife Evelyn of Durham, N.C., Michael and his wife Sandra; and sister-in-law, Loraine Martin of Tavares, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
