DOVER - Gordon L. "Woody" Woodlin Sr. died June 18, 2007, in Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover.
Mr. Woodlin was born Oct. 27, 1942, in Dover, son of the late Charles Herbert Woodlin and Francis Prattis Woodlin.
He was educated in the Caesar Rodney, Dover, and Middletown Louis L. Redding school districts. After leaving school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves in which he was honorably discharged from both.
After his discharge in the military, he returned to Delaware and married Sylvia Woodlin in 1962.
With this union was born a daughter, Pamela Briddell; and a son, Gordon L. Woodlin Jr. who left this life July 5, 1989.
He was employed on various local jobs and remained at Delaware State University for more than 30 years as a sergeant in the security department until he retired in 2000. During his tenure at DSU, he completed the City of Dover Police training and certification.
Mr. Woodlin loved people and was always willing to help anyone in need. He loved crabbing, fishing, boxing, football, basketball and baseball. He particularly loved baseball as he remained a lifelong player and coach at the Gun & Rod Club in Houston.
He was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Harrington.
In addition to his parents and son, he is also preceded in death by a brother, Julius C. Woodlin, Sr.; and a nephew, Kenny Beecher.
He is survived by his two children, Pamela Briddell and Jamal Woodlin, both of Dover; four grandchildren, Miasha Woodlin, Laree Briddell, April Briddell, all of Dover and Angelita Briddell of Rhode Island; a sister, Lois Beecher of Camden; a brother, Aubrey Stevenson of Dover; a sister-in-law, Shirley Woodlin of New Castle; and a special cousin raised as his sister, Phyllis Scott of Camden; three aunts, Bertha Foote and Mable Jones, both of Baltimore and Laura Waters of Dover; a longtime companion, Juanita Parker and her children with whom he raised, Jason Parker, Vilicia Parker, Victoria Bowden and Leta Parker, all of Dover; and two grandchildren, Shafawn Parker and Dajuan Parker; two special friends, Alfreda Smith of Milford and Philomonia Goldsboro of Camden; a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Marydel, Md.
