BOWERS BEACH - George W. Kaercher Jr. of Bowers Beach passed away Monday, July 30, 2007, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna, after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, as well as his adopted hospice family. He was 67.
George was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Beaver Falls, Pa., to the late George Sr. and Gwendolyn (Emes) Kaercher.
He was a life member of the Bowers Beach Volunteer Fire Co. He was also a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge, Frederica Senior Center and Harvest Years Senior Center.
George was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He worked at Eastern Shore Concrete, Bear, and later for the State of Delaware Department of Transportation, Building and Maintenance Department, retiring in 2001.
George enjoyed bowling, dancing and bingo, and his favorite pastime was playing the slots at Midway Slots, Harrington, and Dover Downs.
He loved to spend time with "his boy," grandson Brandon, with whom he shared a special bond. He also enjoyed his youngest granddaughter, Alyssa, who inspired him to fight a tough battle against cancer so he could see her learn to walk and talk.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline (Spayd) Kaercher, in 2006; a brother, John Kaercher; and a grandson, Graig R. Rust.
He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Johnny Moyer Jr. of Harrington, Debra and Coleman Morris Jr. of Frederica, Lida Ann Villanueva of Harrington and her former husband Randy Rust Villanueva of Felton, and Shirley and Phillip Pennington Sr. of Bowers Beach; a sister, Theona Carson of Dover; his grandchildren, John Moyer III, Kevin Moyer, Coleman Morris III, Lindsay Osika, Tammy Greene, Tisha Boyd, Tara Geyer, Phil Pennington Jr., Adam Pennington, Tyler Pennington, Brandon Haggerty and Allyssa Pennington; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Remembrance services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Barratt"s Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Heartland Hospice, the Stockton Building, 261 Chupman Road, Suite 100, Newark, DE 19702.
