George Anthony Hockensmith

George Anthony Hockensmith, 95

HARRINGTON - George Anthony Hockensmith, of Harrington, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 95.

Mr. Hockensmith was born in McSherrystown, Pa., son of the late Cletuis and Mary Hockensmith

As a teenager during the Depression, he would follow crop pickers from state to state from the East Coast to the West Coast, picking crops.

Mr. Hockensmith later served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was part of a special escort outfit that escorted prisoners between various countries.

After the army, he became a shoe cutter. He worked for the Brooks Shoe Co., Philadelphia, and the Hanover Shoe Co., where he designed and made baby shoes.

In his spare time, Mr. Hockensmith enjoyed shooting pool. He was rather talented at pool and won numerous trophies over the years.

He also enjoyed playing cards, checkers and dominoes.

Mr. Hockensmith looked forward to playing bingo at the Harrington Senior Center.

He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Doylestown, Pa., where he was a lifetime member, and was a member of the Harrington Senior Center and St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hockensmith was preceded in death by his brothers, Clair, Phillip, Sylvester, Marcellius, Paul and William; and sisters, Geneive and Bernidine.

He is survived by his brother, Cyril Hockensmith of Harrington; sisters, Mary Canissa of Dallas, Pa., Anna Kricton of McSherrystown and Helena Dietry of Pine Mountain, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
