SUDLERSVILLE, Md. - Gayland Newton Clark, of Sudlersville, died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at his home. He was 77.
Mr. Clark was born Jan. 25, 1931, in Queen Anne's County, son of the late Vernon Clark and Nettie (Baker) Clark.
He was a 1949 graduate of Sudlersville High School.
Mr. Clark worked as a lab technician for General Foods and retired in 1988.
He was a member and past president of Sudlersville Lions Club and a member of the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in April 1998.
Mr. Clark was a past Sudlersville Town Commissioner, a youth baseball coach and former referee and umpire and was the recipient of the Benedict A. Andrew Sons of American Legion Squadron 296 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sports in Queen Anne's County.
He loved playing baseball, basketball and soccer in high school as well as after high school in various leagues in the area. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and playing cards.
In addition to his parents Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Frances Clough Clark; and two brothers, Marion Clark and Beverly Clark.
He is survived by two sons, Greg Clark and wife Trudy of Sudlersville, Md., and Randy Clark and wife Laurie of Sudlersville; and two granddaughters, Rebecca Clark Lepter of Kennedyville and Jordan Clark of Sudlersville.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment will be private in Sudlersville Cemetery.
