Frances A. Replogle

Frances A. (Schanz) Replogle

ALTOONA, Pa. - Frances A. (Schanz) Replogle, 98, of Altoona, Pa., passed away Oct. 20, 2009, at her daughter's residence. She was born in Altoona on March 15, 1911, daughter of Jacob and Hilda (Karlie) Schanz, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and formerly a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She married Robert Keagy Replogle on March 30, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Altoona. Together, they owned and operated a "mom and pop" grocery store, first at Spruce Avenue and 29th Street and later at 7th Avenue and 20th Street. She continued to operate the store after her husband's death in 1963 until her retirement in 1974. She graduated from Altoona Catholic High School in 1929. Over the years, she enjoyed the company of family and friends, her "friendship gardens" and her many faithful canine and feline companions, most especially Hildie. In recent years, she enjoyed lively games of "Rummikub" and was awarded a medallion by the CEO of the company for her skill in playing the game. Mrs. Replogle is survived by two daughters, Meda Rankin (Warren, deceased) with whom she resided, and Shirley Hickey of Felton, Del. and son-in-law, David Hickey also of Felton; four grandchildren, Seana M. Esmaili (Sam) of Altoona, John P. Urban (Lisa) of Hollidaysburg, Danis M. Urban of Hampton, Va., and Rachel A. Buck (Michael) of Newark, Del.; two step-grandchildren, Krista M. Lawson (David) of Harrington, Del., and Susan J. Farmer (Travis) of Ramstein, Germany; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Esmaili, Savannah Esmaili, Brian Urban, Kate Urban, and Sarah Urban; three great step-grandchildren, Danielle Wilson, Natalie Lawson, and Kaira Lawson; extended family members, Nicolee Hiltz (James) and Jessica and Michael of Hummelstown. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 25, at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th, Altoona, Pa., (www.stevensmortuary.com) where a Vigil for the deceased will be held. A Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 26, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg by Fr. Clement Gardner. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona. Extended family and friends are invited to participate in a luncheon held in her honor at noon, Monday, Oct. 26, at the Lakemont Park Casino.
