HOCKESSIN - Elmer Teas Warren of Hockessin, formerly of Lewes, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Elsmere. He was 88.
Mr. Warren was born July 5, 1918, in Camden, N.J., the only son of the late Elmer S. and Dr. Nellie Teas Warren.
He was a 1936 graduate of Merchantville High School, Merchantville, N.J., and attended Camden County Vocational School where he trained to be an aircraft mechanic.
Mr. Warren enlisted in the U.S. Army Jan. 5, 1942, and was assigned to the Army Air Force. He was then assigned to Europe and North Africa and was in the Battle of Normandy as well as other campaigns in the European Theatre.
He returned to the United States in 1945 and in June of 1947, he married the love of his life, Betsy Catherine Astbury of London.
While in the United States, Mr. Warren served on escort duty until 1949.
He received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Medal, Unit Citation, and Good Conduct Medal during World War II.
Mr. Warren re-enlisted and later served in both the Korean Conflict and occupied Japan for which he received the Korean Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Japanese Occupation Medal. He returned to the United States in 1952. After retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he and his wife lived in Lewes for more than 37 years.
He worked for All American Engineering Co., Townsend Poultry Co., Confidential Services Co., and Lewes Fish Products Co., until finally retiring in 1982. After retirement, he first resided in Ingleside Retirement Home and then moved to Cokesbury Village Retirement Home in Hockessin.
Mr. Warren was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betsy Catherine "Kitty" (Astbury) Warren in 1997.
He is survived by two sisters, Miriam L. Williams of Hockessin and Grace Sparano, of Milford; and a nephew, George N. Williams Jr. of Arlington, Texas.
Graveside services with military honors will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Milford Community Cemetery, N. Walnut St., Milford.
