ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Eleanor S. Rau of Alpharetta, formerly of Milford, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, in her home. She was 87.
Mrs. Rau was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Church Hill, Md., daughter of the late Bernard and Mary Shortall.
She moved to Milford in 1938 to attend nursing school at Milford Memorial Hospital. She graduated as a registered nurse Dec. 1, 1941.
After raising her children, Mrs. Rau returned to work at the age of 45 with the Head Start Program in Delaware. She later became a school nurse, working briefly in Milford Middle School before becoming head nurse at Milford High School. She retired after 26 years of service.
In her early years, she enjoyed golfing, spending time with her friends in the sewing club and volunteering her time with the hospital gift shop and the annual hospital fair. In later years, she enjoyed traveling to visit her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rau believed in helping others through her work and several charitable donations.
She is survived by two sons, George H. Draper IV of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Charles B. Draper of Kissimmee, Fla.; a daughter, Diane D. Wood of Alpharetta; six grandchildren, Samantha Telaak, Ryan Draper, Whitney Draper, Kendal Draper, Brandon Wood and Peyton Wood; and three great-grandchildren, Sydney Telaak, Halley Telaak and Ethan Telaak.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, in Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford. A reception will follow in the church.
Graveside services will be Monday, April 2, 2007, in Arlington (Virginia) National Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1138 Parsons Road, Salisbury, MD 21801; or Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, 158 Linwood Plaza, Suite 220, Fort Lee, N.J. 07024.
