DOVER - Eileen Conway Hensley passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020. She died at Bayhealth Medical from complications of covid 19.
Eileen was born May 2, 1928 in Garden City, N.J. to the late Joseph Augustine Conway and Anna Rutherford Conway. She grew in up Scranton, Pa. As her father's business travel moved the family and they settled in Norfolk, Va. and graduated from Holy Trinity High School.
She attended Old Dominion and transferred to Virginia Polytechnical Institute (now Virginia Tech) and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Chemistry. She was recruited as an early female pioneer as a research chemist at DuPont. She met her husband of 57 years, Evan Hensley in Wilmington, Del.
They moved to Baltimore, then Salisbury, Md. and settled in Dover, Del. in 1964. She raised three children. She taught in the local high school and helped run her husband's business, Carl King Tire Company. She was an active member of the Dover Lioness club.
Eileen grew up loving the beach and enjoyed a summer beach place in Lewes for years. She loved cooking for her family. She was a big sports fan and followed the Orioles and the Ravens. She was a smart, resilient and loving woman. She was sharp until the very end and lived in her own home. She was a wonderful grandmother and helped raise her grandkids in Dover. She went to so many school concerts, games and events well into her 90's. She wintered in Florida for many years and loved to visit New Orleans to see her daughter and family there. She loved attending Mardi Gras there.
In addition to her parents; she was preceded by her husband, Evan V. Hensley, Sr.; and sister, Frances Rowsey.
She is survived by her children, Sheila Hensley Hunnicutt of St. Bernard, La., Patricia Hensley of Alexandria, Va. and Evan Hensley Jr. (Leslie) of Dover; sister, Patricia Meneely of Annapolis, Md. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ken Hunnicutt, Amy Hunnicutt Williams, Evan V. Hensley III, Dylan Hensley, Elise A. Hensley; and great grandchildren, Katie, Koi and Kain Williams.
Funeral services will be held at Torbert Funeral Chapel on Route 10, Dover, Del. on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020. Friends can visit at 11 a.m. with a service at 12 noon. Masks are required. Graveside ceremony will be private. She will be buried at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Del.
