Dwight T. Schenk, 88

BETHANY BEACH - Dwight T. Schenk, of Bethany Beach, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008. He was 88.

Dwight served in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent his 30-year civilian government career with TECOM (Test and Evaluation Command) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

After he retired in 1972, he and his wife Velma spent the next 25 years traveling.

As a tour director, Mr. Schenk led caravans of motor homes through Mexico, Central America to Panama and as far north as Alaska.

Originally from Oakland, Md., he owned and operated Lake Forest Campground in Deep Creek Lake, Md. from 1969 to 1989. He founded MAC (the Maryland Association of Campgrounds).

Mr. Schenk moved to Bethany Beach in 1989 and recently to his new home in South Bethany.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Velma B. Schenk; four daughters, Carole Lindes and Donna Wade of Bethany Beach, Ellie Garrison of Aberdeen, Md., and Vickie Frazier of Ocean City, Md.; nine grandchildren; 14 great -grandchildren; and his brother, John Schenk of Aberdeen.

A memorial service at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Oakland, Md. is being planned.
