GREENWOOD - Dolores Lyons Batson, of Greenwood, passed away and into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, the late Luther H. Lyons and Marilyn W. Lyons. She is survived by Pleasant Batson Jr., her husband of 53 years; a daughter, Rebecca Batson Kidner; son-in-law, C. Scott Kidner; and grandchildren Jack, Jeffrey, and Grant Kidner of Dover. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Monty G. Lyons, and Elizabeth A. Lyons of Harwinton, Conn.; many nieces and nephews, and cousins. She graduated from Greenwood High School and attended the University of Delaware. She was an avid horse enthusiast and at every point in her life owned them. She grew up in a harness racing family, her father having owned and driven the legendary pacer, Adios Harry, to world records. She herself drove in matinee horse races, successfully competing against adults in a male dominated sport when she was just a teen. She pursued a career in training and racing horses and running a retail saddle and harness shop with her husband. She was particularly talented in training young horses and getting remarkable results with the use of a consistent kind and gentle touch – a horse whisperer of sorts. She was an accomplished seamstress and also mastered the lost art of caning and of rushing and enjoyed restoring antique chairs using these techniques. She was an active member of Independent Bible Fellowship Church in Harrington, and the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association prior to her illness. She will be remembered for her love of the Lord, her devotion to family, her honesty and integrity and her willingness to help others. She will be sorely missed by family and friends. The family wishes to thank Randy and Berta Kaufman and those at Caring Hearts and Hands for their kindness and extraordinary care during her illness. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., at Valley Chapel – Andrews Mortuary, 4108 S. College Rd., Wilmington, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, with a graveside service immediately following at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her memory to: Horse Lovers United, Inc., P.O. Box 2744, Salisbury, MD 21802, whose mission is to provide care for retired racehorses and place them for adoption. Letters of condolence may be sent and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
