GREENWOOD - David Eldon Swartzentruber of Greenwood passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, Aug. 24, 2007. He was 74.
Mr. Swartzentruber was a lifelong, active member of Greenwood Mennonite Church, where he served on various committees over the years.
He graduated from Greenwood Mennonite School, and attended both the Berlin (Ohio) Bible Institute and Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, Va.
Mr. Swartzentruber spent two years serving at Middletown (Conn.) State Hospital for his 1-W service.
He was a dairy farmer all of his life, retiring in 1998.
Mr. Swartzentruber"s home was always open to those that needed a place to stay. Over the years, numerous people, including GMS school teachers, students, nieces and nephews, stayed at the Swartzentruber home.
He served on the board, as treasurer, of the Greenwood Mennonite School faithfully for many years.
Mr. Swartzentruber was the youngest son of the late Eli and Amelia (Bender) Swartzentruber. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Bertha Yoder; and his brother, Mark.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Violet (Zehr) Swartzentruber; and seven children, Sheldon and his wife Sylvia of Greenwood, Ralph and his wife Lucinda of Keezletown, Va., Christine Heatwole and her husband Ransford of Bridgewater, Va., Carlene Swartzentruber and her husband John David of Bridgeville, Stuart and his wife Delores of Sudbury, Ontario, Richard and his wife Christine of Greenwood, and Cecil and his wife Lee Ann of Lynn Haven, Fla. He was the loving and proud grandfather of 22 grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Earl of Talbert, Ky.; and five sisters, Rhoda Showalter of Plain City, Ohio, Esther Nafziger of Lititz, Pa., Caroline Yoder of Greenwood, Lois Bontrager of Quarryville, Pa., and Twila Guengerich of Springs, Pa.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Mennonite Church, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Internment will be at Greenwood Mennonite Church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations be sent to the Alzheimer"s Association, 109 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE 19947.
