Clara Elizabeth Short 'Betty', 88

WYOMING/DOVER - Clara Elizabeth (Betty) Hollingsworth Short, died April 2, 2009, in Kent General Hospital. She was 88. Betty was born Feb. 11, 1921 in Wilmington. She graduated from Newark High School in 1939 and attended the University of Delaware. She was a homemaker most of her life. Betty also worked as a substitute teacher at Caesar Rodney High School from 1965 to 1983. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening and was an avid cat lover. For over 50 years, Betty proudly exhibited her crocheting and baked goods at the Delaware State Fair. Betty was a member of Bible Fellowship Church, where she was a member of the prayer chain committee. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Horace E. Short Sr., in January 2008; her parents, Anna D. Smith Hollingsworth Atkiss and Robert E. Hollingsworth Sr.; and brother, Robert E. Hollingsworth Jr. She is survived by four children, H. Edward Jr. (Lucille) of Glasgow, Mary Ellen Short of Baltimore, Md., Thomas C. (Monica) of Dover, and Elizabeth A. Sperati (William) of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Short of Lawrence, Kan., Michael Short of Terra Haute, Ind., Jacob Sperati of Seattle, Wash., PFC Joshua Sperati (Peggy) of Fort Sill, Okla., and Rebecca Sperati of Wilmington; three step-grandchildren, Michael Hughes (Rachel) of Columbia, S.C., Katie Hughes of Dover, and Tim Hughes of Newark; four step-great-grandchildren, Anna and Bella Hughes, Charisma Yost, and Nicholas Emerick; and sisters, Ruth Mullen of Northeast, Md., and Jane Carter of Eubank, Ky. A viewing will be 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, followed by burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bible Fellowship Church, 201 E. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Camden, DE 19934; or The Caesar Rodney High School FFA, 239 Old North Road, Camden, DE 19934. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
