MILFORD - Charles Elias "Chuck" Moses passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
Chuck was a beloved family man, military veteran, decorated educator, and dedicated Milford community member. Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, Chuck was the son of the late Elias and Annisey (Atiyeh) Moses. Chuck attended Edinboro State Teachers College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1953. He went on to earn his Master of Education and certification in executive training for Special Education Administrators from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1963. Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. While stationed in Korea, Chuck taught English at the National Institute under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church.
Chuck began his career as an educator in Pennsylvania, teaching Social Studies for the Emlenton School District, Geography and History in New Kensington, and serving as a Guidance Counselor and later as District Director of Pupil Personnel and Services with the Gateway School District in Monroeville. In 1970, Chuck relocated to Delaware where he served out a distinguished career with the Milford School District. He began as the Director of Pupil Personnel and Services. In 1984, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent. Then in 1987, Chuck was appointed as the Interim Superintendent. The following year he became the Superintendent, serving his community until his retirement in 1996.
In 1993, Chuck received the prestigious Delaware Superintendent of the Year Award for his work with the Milford School District. He also was awarded the N.A.A.C.P. Peacemaker Award from the Slaughter Neck Chapter of the N.A.A.C.P.
Throughout his career, Chuck was involved with many local organizations. He was a member of the Council of Exceptional Children, where he served as the President for the State of Delaware in 1972. He was a member of People's Place II Board of Directors, where he served as Vice President in 1974. Chuck was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, serving as President in 1988. He was a member of the Milford Chamber of Commerce, where he served as President in 1984. In 1992, Chuck served on the Board of Directors of Jobs for Delaware Graduates. Chuck also served as Chairman of the Delmarva Chicken Festival, which had been sponsored by the Milford Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his previous wife, Dr. Judy Spiegel – Moses in 2003; and his sister, Charlotte Simon, in 2011.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Moses; two sons, John Charles (Kim) and Robert Charles Moses (Sandy); four step-daughters, Mary Virostek (Brian), Theresa Hayes (Peter), Ruth Jones (Rocco), and Sara Silva (Jesyl); one brother, Dr. Lawrence Moses of Wooster, Ohio; one sister, Laura Jo Younes (Salem) of Allentown, Pa.; his beloved grandchildren, Michael, Bailey, Jordan (Carlos), Allison and Madison Moses, Megan Melvin, Erin and Amy Virostek, Jakob and Matthew Hayes, Johnathan and Ryan Jones, McKayla and Alaina Silva; one great granddaughter, Liliana Stubbs; numerous nieces and great nieces and nephew; and extended family, Drs. Ron and JoAnn Spiegel.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the celebration of Chuck's life on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, at Lighthouse Christian Center, located at 347 Calvary Road in Milford. The viewing will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by funeral services at 7 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
