LEWES - Charles Edward Southwell of Lewes died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Christiana Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Georgetown earlier in the day. He was 83.
Mr. Southwell was born and raised near Trolley Square, Wilmington, son of the late Charles Jepson Southwell and Ruth (Strange) Southwell.
He received his bachelor"s and master"s degrees in mathematics from the University of Delaware.
Mr. Southwell had been employed in industrial engineering, retiring in 1970, after a career spanning more than 40 years in various states and Puerto Rico.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Southwell was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will long be remembered for his terrific sense of humor.
He was kind and very generous with his time, and was on his way to math tutoring at the time of the horrific and violent automobile accident.
An avid athlete his entire life, Mr. Southwell could be found working out every day in his home gym and for several years was seen daily in the Plantations Gym.
He was also an avid reader and was well known at the Lewes Library.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ted Southwell.
Mr. Southwell is survived by his wife, June (Keating) Southwell of Lewes; two daughters, Tracy (Southwell) Pugh and her husband, Jim of Georgetown and Bahdra Schuler and her husband, Stephen R. of Seattle; a son, Brand Harlan Southwell of Taunton, Mass.; a sister, Ruth Ann Crosby of Wilmington; a brother, Jim Southwell of Arden; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mental Health Association of your choice.
