Catherine Estelle (Bell) Purnell

Catherine Estelle (Bell) Purnell was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Churchland, Va., and raised in Berkley, Va. She died March 27, 2007, in Dover. She was 80.

She was the daughter of the late Alfred Bell and Lucy Gaines, and was educated in the public schools in Churchland, as well as at the Wilfred Beauty Academy in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y.

Catherine was the youngest of five siblings who all preceded her in death. At the age of 17 she married the late James Pulley. From this union they conceived three beautiful daughters, the late Phyllis Pulley Hoskie, Cora Pulley Williams and Gracie Pulley Harris.

At the death of her eldest daughter, Phyllis, in 1964, without hesitation she lovingly extended her role as "Mommy" to her four grandchildren, Warren V. Hoskie, Simone A. Hoskie, Malvina J. Hoskie and Benita M. Hoskie. In 1974, she decided to move to Norfolk, Va., to help take care of her two elderly great aunts. While living in Virginia, she met and married John W. Purnell, who passed away in 1979.

At the tender age of 54, she once again with the same dedication of unfailing love, assumed the responsibility of raising two of her great-grandchildren, Asheaya L. Hoskie and Maurice J. Hoskie. She would then venture to Augusta, Ga., and then on to Dover, which became her final resting place. She leaves to mourn all children named above, three sons-in-law, Eddie Harris, Stanley Beckham and Russell Newson Jr., nine grandchildren, one deceased grandchild, 16 great-grandchildren, one deceased great-grandchild, two great-great-grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Sleep on and take your rest.
