'Poncho', 77 DOVER - Carl Lee Coker "Poncho", formerly of Dover passed from this life on June 27, 2015 while living in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born Oct. 24, 1937 in Kent County Delaware, the son of James Henry "Ted" and Mary Elizabeth Durham-Coker. Carl served six years in the Delaware National Guard in Dover, from 1956 ~ 1962. He did farm work at home and for the local farmers in his youth. Carl had purchased a self-propelled combine in 1956, and did custom combining for the local farmers. He drove trucks hauling milk, feed and produce for Lloyd "Buddy" Warren and Spencer's trucking in Clayton. Carl was a self-employed livestock dealer, and hauler for twenty years. He had a customer base that included the Amish in Del. and Pa. Carl had many customers throughout Del., Md., and Pa. He also supplied hogs and beef cattle to butchers shops in Del., Md. and for A.F. Moyer Packing Company in Allentown, Pa. Carl bought and sold all kinds of livestock to and from his many customers in the tri-state area. He was a regular buyer at livestock auction sales at Carroll's Sales Co. in Felton, Del., Rudnick Sales Co., Galena, Md., New Holland sales Stables, New Holland, Pa., Lancaster Stock Yards, Lancaster, Pa., Vintage Sales and Stables, Pardise, Pa., and attended many farm auction sales in the tri state area throughout the 60's and 70's. Carl also bought, sold, trained and raced harness race horses. He raced at tracks in Del., Ill., Ind., Ky., Md., N.H., N.Y. and Pa. in the late 60's and 70's. Carl retired from the livestock and racing business in 1980. He moved from Del. to Ariz. in 1981 and started a new career joining the security department if Valley National Bank, as a supervisor at their Operations and Data Center. Carl achieved the title of Corporate Officer, and Master Security Office Manager in 1991. Valley National Bank merged with Bank One Corporation and he advanced to A.V.P., and was promoted to Physical Security Manager until his retirement in 1996. During his retirement he enjoyed taking care of his fruit trees, flowers, cactus desert land scape and enjoyed sporting events. Carl also enjoyed acoustic country music festivals, and was a member of the Ariz. Bluegrass Association. He was member of the American Legion Post #107, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2957, and the Elks lodge #335 all in Ariz. The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, located in Frankfort, Ky. and the Tennessee Squire Association in Lynchburg, Tenn. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Glendora Coker; brother, Charles Coker. He is survived by his daughter, Carleen Lee McCabe of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, James Coker of Dover, Gene Coker and his wife Nancy of Dover and Larry Coker of Smyrna; sister, Evelyn Townsend and her husband Worth of Dover and several nieces and nephews and many cousins. Memorial services will be held 7 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Immanuel Union Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Immanuel Union Methodist Church, PO Box 309, Cheswold, Del. 19936.
