Calvin Edward "Candyman" Clark Sr., 83
NEWARK - Calvin Edward "Candyman" Clark Sr. of Newark died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 83.
Born in Colgate, Okla., Calvin was the son of the late John Edward Thomas and Ibbie (Ball) Clark.
He began his adventurous life at the age of 10 by leaving Colgate with the "Alligator Man" to join the circus.
During World War II, beginning at the tender age of 17, Calvin served his country in the U.S. Merchant Marine for 19 years, where he visited numerous ports of call around the world.
For 27 years he worked as a pipe fitter and mechanic for the DuPont Co., retiring in 1986.
Calvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge 36, the Newark Senior Center and the bowling leagues at Blue Hen Lanes.
His wife, Grace R. (Zerby) Clark, predeceased him in 1999.
Calvin will be missed by his daughters, Nellie "Cookie" Maxwell and her husband Clarence "Max" of Bear, and Sharon McGuire and her husband Michael of Felton; his son, Calvin E. Jr. and his wife Andrea of New Castle; four grandchildren, Mary E. McGuire, Renee Maxwell, Nichole Fouracre and Edward McGuire; eight great-grandchildren, Nichole, Cheyenne, Darren, Katelyn, Hunter, Liam, Grace and Kylie; his sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Ben Potts, of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, where friends may call after 9 a.m.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.
