Bobby Lee Stiers

FELTON - Bobby Lee Stiers, 83, of Felton, passed away on December 29, 2014 at his home. Bobby was born in Wentworth, North Carolina, on July 10, 1931. Upon reaching 15 years of age, he passed himself off as 18 years old and joined the 30th Infantry Division, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He had a successful career in aircraft maintenance, then became a flight engineer. He performed flight engineer duties on KC-97, C-124 & C141 aircraft, before retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant from the Air Force in 1969. Post Air Force, he was engaged in several careers. He sold real estate for a while. He was the proprietor of Bob's Grocery in Petersburg. He also owned Air Base Car Sales and Salty Sarge Seafood, both located in Dover. Finally, he owned & operated Salty Sarge Military Surplus Sales, in Felton. His passion was for hunting, and generally being outdoors. Much of the year was spent preparing for Delaware deer season, when he truly enjoyed being with friends in the woods. Bobby is survived by his first wife, Inice Sue Stiers; his second wife, Margaret A. Stiers; three children, Michael L. Stiers, Rebecca Stiers Kauffman (Robert), Donald W. Stiers (Leona); step son, Mikell G. Cherricks; step daughter, Tina M. Stanley; grandchildren, Scott Kauffman, Michael Gleasner, Samantha Stiers, Robert Cherricks, Mercedes Cherricks, Loutina Stanley and Dashea Stanley; as well as a host of loving great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2015 in the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Main Street in Felton. Reverend Bruce Tribbitt of Manship Chapel, Felton, will be officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions mailed to Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, DE 19968, Mailing address P.O. Box 233, Milton, DE 19968, to help defray funeral expenses.
