49ers owner Jed York suspended for 6 games after his arrest in prostitution sting
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games following his arrest earlier this year in a prostitution sting in Ohio. The league announced that York also was fined $500,000 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. York has not attended any games or league meetings so far this season and was credited with three games served. He is eligible to return on Oct. 20, following the team’s game the previous night against Washington.
CBS announces Tony Romo's permanent exit following arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated
CBS Sports and Tony Romo have officially parted ways one month after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback pleaded no contest to charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Romo had been on leave since his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin. He had been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017. CBS Sports announced Romo's exit in a statement that said they had mutually agreed to part ways. Romo was arrested following a traffic stop as he was driving south on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin.
Ohtani's injuries lingering into postseason, and even he can't pinpoint what's behind them
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani isn't sure about the extent of his injuries that kept him off the mound after the All-Star break and landed him on the injured list recently. He plans to address them in the offseason. Ohtani says he's feeling better going into the National League Division Series opener against Atlanta on Saturday. The Braves' rotation is strained and they'll likely add some pitchers to their NLDS roster after ruling out starters Martín Pérez and Bryce Elder. Game 1 will be played during the day in Los Angeles, which is under an extreme heat warning. Saturday's high temperature is forecast to hit 100 degrees. The average high for early October is 81 degrees.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gabby Williams scored 19 points and hit a go-ahead 17-footer with 1:17 remaining, and the Golden State Valkyries won a late replay review to finish a rally from 16 points down and beat the Dallas Wings 77-73 in a wild deciding Game 3 of their first-round WNBA playoff series. With 13.1 seconds left and Golden State leading by one, Williams jumped back inbounds to corral her own miss on a play that was originally ruled Dallas’ ball, but Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase successfully challenged the call. Williams scored all but two of her points after halftime. Arike Ogunbowale led Dallas with 30 points.
Marcus Mariota to start for Commanders against Colts in London with Jayden Daniels ruled out
WATFORD, England (AP) — Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota will get his second straight start in place of the injured Jayden Daniels on Sunday when Washington faces the Indianapolis Colts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Head coach Dan Quinn announced the decision Friday after practice at the team’s luxury hotel accommodations outside London. Daniels returned to practice this week after dislocating his elbow in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. He’s been wearing a protective brace and expressed no concerns about further damage.
Arizona State asks former state chief justice to lead independent review of hockey player's collapse
Arizona State has asked a former chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court to lead an independent review of the collapse of hockey player Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout in August. The school said Scott Bales will review Arizona State’s findings and information provided by attorneys representing the Mayich family and hockey team members, as well as by law enforcement. The 21-year-old Mayich collapsed during a workout on the first day the NCAA allows official activities. He suffered from exertional heat stroke that reduced flow of oxygen to his brain and is unlikely to recover, according to family attorney Rob Carey.
Penguins F Andrei Kuzmenko switches jersey to No. 62 to honor father killed in bear attack in Russia
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins forward Andrei Kuzmenko is changing his jersey number to 62 to honor his father Alexander, who died in a bear attack in Russia last week at age 62. Kuzmenko has returned to practice with the Penguins after attending his father's funeral in Moscow. The 30-year-old signed a one-year, $5 million contract with Pittsburgh over the summer. He explained that his father was attacked by a bear while fishing in Siberia. Kuzmenko described his father's death as a "big shock." Kuzmenko, who used to wear No. 10, also noted that his mother was born in 1962.

Maybe the Cleveland Browns didn’t strike out when they made that blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson. A deal that was a disaster for four years is suddenly producing some hits. After Browns owner Jimmy Haslam called the trade “a big swing and miss,” Watson beat out Shedeur Sanders for the starting job. It appeared the experiment would only last two weeks and Sanders would start the home opener in Week 3 in front of the fans Watson called out in training camp for cheering when he got hurt in 2024.
Trail Blazers fire new TV announcer for inappropriate social media posts he made as a teenager
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers fired new play-by-play television broadcaster Braiden Bell on Thursday when past inappropriate social media posts that he made as a teenager resurfaced just hours after the team announced his hiring. Bell had been the play-by-play announcer for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the G League’s Valley Suns before the Trail Blazers announced they had hired him. Hours later, KGW-TV in Portland reported on social media posts that the 29-year-old Bell made in 2012 and 2013. Bell apologized Friday for his posts, saying he wrote them when he was 15 and they don't reflect who he his today.
