TANGIER ISLAND, VA. - Mr. Andrew Thomas Parks, husband of the late Adlene Dize Parks, and a lifelong resident of Tangier Island, Va., passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at his residence. Born Oct. 9, 1925 on Tangier Island, he was a son of the late Thomas Galloway Parks and Ida Belle Williams Parks. Mr. Parks served his country in the United States Army during World War II, and then returned to Tangier where he was the town carpenter. Known for making an entrance, he was often heard before seen, spreading laughter throughout the island. He enjoyed duck hunting and working on the water in his down time, but church, community, and his beloved family always came first. Andrew never met a stranger and will be remembered by all for his quick wit, charm, and especially, for his contagious smile. He is survived by his four loving children, Bella Parks Burnett of Gordonsville, Va., Denise Parks Dize and husband Norman F. of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Andrew T. Parks, Jr. and wife Mary Stuart of Tangier, and Lt. Col. Ret. Kenneth Parks and wife Naomi of Chesapeake, Va; a brother, Robert "Bob" Parks of Tangier; twelve grandchildren, Jennifer Laird, Thomas Burnett, Susan Holtzman, Brad and Nicholas Dize, Rachael Richardson, Christopher, Michael, Georgianna, David, Stewart, and Erin Parks, Megan DuBose, and Abbe O'Connell; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Dace Dise, Ada Wheatley, and Edith Shores; and a brother, Paige Parks. Funeral services will be conducted from the Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverends John Flood and Robert Parks officiating. Interment will follow in the New Testament Church Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the church on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502. Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements by the Williams Funeral Homes, Parksley and Onancock, VA.
