BRIDGEVILLE - Alex J. Summers, of Bridgeville, formerly of North Hills, Long Island, N.Y., passed away peacefully, Monday, April 13, 2009, in his home after a short illness. He was surrounded by family, friends, and pets. He was 95. Mr. Summers was born Feb. 26, 1914, in New York. He was a noted horticulturist and plant collector. His garden, Honeysong Farm, was his delight and included many rare plants, collected from around the world. The garden included over 1,000 varieties of hosta and about 500 varieties of daffodils. It attracted many songbirds. The garden was a destination for visitors, both domestically and internationally, and was a host garden for several American Hosta Society annual conventions. He developed and introduced several perennials and did extensive research on hostas. From 1968 to 1978 he was founding president of the American Hosta Society. Mr. Summers was preceded in death by wives Molly and Genevieve, and his brother Stanley. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Alan and Bonnie Summers of Westminster, Md., and Brian and Kathryn Summers of Katonah, N.Y. A memorial service will be held in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 4385 Dublin Hill Road, Bridgeville, at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Hosta Society, 11 Emerson Ave. East, West St. Paul, MN 55118.
