TOWNSEND - A. Jean Barcus of Townsend died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, in her home with her loving family by her side. She was 68.
Mrs. Barcus was born April 6, 1938, near Taylors Bridge, daughter of the late George and Lillian Ivory.
She was a 1956 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna. Following graduation, she cared for her family and children, and later, worked as a librarian at Townsend Elementary School. She then was employed as a title clerk for 25 years with the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles, New Castle before retiring in 1990.
After retirement, Mrs. Barcus continued to work, serving as the church secretary at Ewell's-St. Paul United Methodist Church, Clayton, and later, as a school crossing guard at Townsend Elementary School.
She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. The most important thing in her life was her family and a desire to help others.
Mrs. Barcus was a life-member of the Townsend Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, and attended Immanuel United Methodist Church, Townsend, and later Scott United Methodist Church, Blackbird.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Raymond A. Barcus Sr.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Raymond A. Jr. and Gayle Barcus of Townsend, Wayne and Susan Barcus of Clayton and Mark Barcus of Townsend; a daughter and a son-in-law, Penny and Dennis Gentry of Little Creek; a brother, Ronald Ivory of Clayton; four grandchildren, Daniel Gentry and his wife, Jessica, Stacy Barcus, Heather Barcus and Michele Gentry; a great-granddaughter, Julianna Gentry; and her beloved dog and bodyguard, Bandit.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Townsend Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 194, Townsend, DE 19734.
