'Bright Sparrow' Gourley DOVER - Yvonne Lynette "Bright Sparrow" Gourley, of Dover, passed away March 11, 2012, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford surrounded by her loving family. Yvonne was born March 4, 1965, in Dover. She was the daughter of Dennis and Loretta Gourley. Yvonne loved the time she spent with her Uncle Alfred and Aunt Marlyn as a small child. Ms. Gourley was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Millie Sammons, William "Billy" and Leola "Mommy Lee" Morris; her paternal grandparents, Edward "Ducky", and Margaret Gourley; and two aunts, Wanda Friss and Peggy Morris. Yvonne graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in 1984. She was an active member of Immanuel Union United Methodist Church where she was lay leader, member of the choir, trustee, and Sunday school teacher. She also had the opportunity to preach in the church several times a year. Yvonne was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape tribe of Delaware and New Jersey. She enjoyed dancing and participating in the annual pow-wows. Yvonne was extremely proud of her heritage and participated in the Native American Youth Education Program. Her heart was in everything that she did but her pride and joy was the tribal youth group. She was a terrific role model for all children. Yvonne was an avid dancer and music lover; she especially loved Elvis Presley. Every Sunday Yvonne bowled in a league at the Brunswick Bowling Alley in Dover with her friends and team-mates. She was a NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Philly fan. Shortly before her illness Yvonne achieved her personal goal of purchasing a new blue jeep similar to her Aunt Mar Moo's. Yvonne was a gentle soul who touched the lives of all she met with her contagious laughter, kind words, and vibrant smile. Her heart was huge and enjoyed adding new friends to her list of family. She spent much of her time helping others in need and will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her uncles, Alfred Sammons and wife JoAnne, Terry Sammons and wife Mary Ann, Kenneth Gourley Sr. and his friend Sharon Jones, Bruce Morris and fiancée Trudy Davis, Robert Carey and Ruth Buford; aunts, Marlyn Gourley and husband Joseph, Janet Shaw, Janice Durham and husband Tony, Teresa Morgan and husband Sonny, Anita Wright and husband Bobby; too many cousins to name; and her beloved dog, Bones. Family and friends may call Friday evening, March 16, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapels 1145 E. Lebanon Rd (Rt.10), Dover, DE 19901. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 17, 2012, 11 a.m. at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, 756 Main Street, Cheswold, DE 19936. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Immanuel Union United Methodist Church Sunday School, PO Box 309, Cheswold, DE 19936.
