SMYRNA - William Walter Hill, Jr., "Bill" passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018.
Bill was born on Jan. 19, 1940 in Dover, the son of the late William Walter Hill, Sr. and Mary Ann Baker Hill. Bill was raised on the Hill family farm in Clayton by his grandparents, the late Walter William Hill and Mary Solloway Hill.
A graduate of Smyrna High School, class of 1958, Bill went on to earn his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Delaware Technical and Community College.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country with honor at Ft. Knox, Ky. He later served in the Delaware Army National Guard.
Bill started his career in law enforcement in 1969, with the Cecil County, Maryland Sheriff's Department. He was a graduate of The Delaware State Police Academy and began his distinguished career with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control in 1972, retiring as Chief of Enforcement for Air and Waste Management with over 32 years of service.
Bill had a passion for restoring classic cars. Over the years, he restored many cars; his favorite model was the 1960 Chevy Impala. He also enjoyed surf fishing and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, and traveling to Bermuda with his lovely wife, Alice.
He was a Life Member of The Delaware FOP Lodge #3, and was a former Smyrna Town Councilman, serving as Vice-Mayor. Bill was also a Past President and Life Member of the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association (Smyrna Opera House).
He was preceded in death by his sister, Robin Hill.
Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alice; his children, Chip Taylor (Sherry), Brian Hill (Danielle); his children from a previous marriage, Katherine and Richard Hill; his grandchildren, Heather, Logan, Bryce, Jordan, and Cruze; his great grandchildren, Cole, Carter, and Ariella; and his step-brothers, David Hill and Michael Hill.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.
