Broken arrow, Okla. - William R. Mast, MD, born in an Amish farmhouse on Jul. 2, 1940 in Hartley passed away peacefully Sun., May 17, 2015. Willie was the son of Clarence and Sylvia Mast of Hartley and was the seventh of nine children. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; and his siblings, Lawrence, Lydia, Daniel, and Lillie. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, of nearly 51 years. He is also survived by his children, Valerie Mast of New York, N.Y., William Mast, of Salisbury, Md., Maria Moore of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Lisa Hart, DO of Jenks, Okla; and his eight grandchildren, Jacob, Emily, Katharine, John, Elias, Lydia, Gideon, and Gavin. He is survived by his siblings, Irene Kauffman of Greenwood, John Mast of Lederach, Pa., Clarence Mast, MD of Tunkannock, Pa., and Robert Mast of Greenwood. William graduated valedictorian from Dover High School in 1958, and valedictorian, Magna cum Laude, BS in Chemistry at Ursinus College of Collegeville, PA in 1962, becoming the first person in his family to graduate college. He earned his MD from U of Penn School of Medicine in1966, and completed Surgical Residency in Otorhinolaryngology also at the U of Pennin 1974. He fulfilled 1W service under Mennonite Central Committee,in Constantine Algeria from 1968-1971. Dr. Bill practiced as an ENT in his home town of Dover from 1975-1984. He was known for his warm and compassionate bedside manner, he never billed clergy, and regularly made house calls to the Amish. He would always offer to pray with his patients and had daily Bible study with his office staff. He was active in Central Mennonite Church in Dover, Lakeview Mennonite Church in Chestertown, Md., and served as an Elder at the Christian Life Center in Dover. In 1984, he moved his family to Broken Arrow, Okla. After a year of sabbatical, he took a position at Oral Roberts University School of Medicine and practiced at City of Faith Medical Center until 1990. He began fulfilling his life-long passion for medical missions by taking his medical students on annual mission trips. In 1990, he opened a private practice in Tulsa, Okla. until his retirement in 2001. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the U of Oklahoma College of Medicine and held affiliations with twelve hospitals and eight medical societies. His passion for medical missions took him on over 40 mission trips to 46 countries, serving the poorest and most remote areas of the world. He was fluent in four languages and conversational in at least seven others. He received ordination from Grace Fellowship in Broken Arrow, Okla., and then Rhema Ministerial Association International in 2004. He was active in prison ministries, and taught at Rhema Bible College. He was known and loved for his warm and compassionate bedside manner. He was always available to pray with patients, friends, and family for any need they encountered, and then actively help them. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, friend, physician and surgeon, and minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Friends may call Sun., May 24, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fleischauer Funeral Home, 16 West Market Street, Greenwood. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Mon., May 25, 2015, at the Greenwood Mennonite Church, where friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Greenwood Mennonite Church Cemetery.
